‘Fatherland’ Trailer: Sandra Hüller Travels Across A Devastated Germany In Pawel Pawlikowski’s Latest

Pawel Pawlikowski, the filmmaker behind Ida and Cold War, continues exploring post-WWII Europe with his latest, Fatherland. The film was well-received recently at Cannes, earning Pawlikoski the award for Best Director. As expected, MUBI will release it in the fall when it’s expected to be a major awards season player.

Fatherland centers on famed German novelist Thomas Mann, played by Hanns Zischler, and his daughter, Erika Mann, played by the incredible Sandra Hüller, most recently seen in Project Hail Mary. The story centers on an emotional road trip across post-war Germany following Thomas’ return from exile in the U.S.

Also in the cast are August Diehl, Devid Striesow, Anna Madeley, David Menkin, and Joachim Meyerhoff. Pawlikowski directs from a script co-written with Hendrik Handloegten.

SYNOPSIS: FATHERLAND centers on the relationship between the Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller) – actress, writer and rally driver. Set at the height of the Cold War, father and daughter embark on a challenging and emotional road trip in a black Buick taking them across a Germany in ruins – from US dominated Frankfurt to Soviet controlled Weimar. For the first time since the war, Mann returns to his native Germany, having made the difficult decision to flee for the safety of the US.

Watch out for when Fatherland is given a firm release date. For now, check out the trailer.
