I don’t know about you, but I’ve quietly been waiting for this trailer. Citizen Vigilante is the anticipated teaming of director Uwe Boll and star Armie Hammer. Boll, the filmmaker who has become such a punchline that he literally challenged his critics to a series of boxing matches (and won them all!), and Hammer, who recently was “canceled” after accusations of sexual assault and cannibalism. What could go wrong? Both men could use a hit, or some kind of comeback, and maybe this is it? Eh, probably not.
Originally titled The Dark Knight until Warner Bros. shut that shit down, Citizen Vigilante stars Hammer as a Charles Bronson-esque antihero who takes justice into his own hands by hunting down violent criminals. While the public sees him as a hero, the Interpol chief, played by Costas Mandylor, sees him as a threat.
Boll calls Citizen Vigilante “very dark and violent” as it explores the current “landscape in Europe” due to the “migrant situation”, which includes “rapes and knife attacks.” Surely there’s more to Europe than that. I’ve seen it. They also have mimes.
You don’t need me to tell you how infamous Boll is. He’s set up permanent residence in the “Bottom 100” movies of all-time list, with such classic trash as Alone in the Dark, Postal, House of the Dead, In the Name of the King, and Bloodrayne. He retired in 2016 but that shit didn’t last long, and he returned with cop thriller First Shift in 2024. It’s so bad it’s almost diabolical.
We actually interviewed Boll a few years ago. For all of my jokes here, I actually respect him quite a lot for being unafraid to do things his way, and for not taking shit from a-hole critics like me. I actually hope Citizen Vigilante is decent and that it does well, but I won’t be shocked if/when it doesn’t. Look for it to be released on June 19th.
