Disney still hasn’t made a decision on bringing back Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, but one decision that new co-chair Dana Walden has made is to move forward with a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie starring Margot Robbie.
Jeff Sneider at TheInSneider has a pretty big scoop, reporting that 1917 writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns is writing the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot featuring Robbie that has become a Disney priority. The story will focus on Jack Sparrow’s son and a new character played by Robbie.
As you may recall, two parallel scripts were put into motion, one featuring Robbie and the other from The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin. Only Robbie’s film has survived, which producer Jerry Bruckheimer all but said would happen. He’s also been a big proponent of bringing Depp back, so don’t be surprised if that happens, too.
Depp has played Sparrow five times, with 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales being the most recent. The franchise has been shipwrecked for years, and I’m not sure anything, even the combo of Robbie and Depp, could revive it.
