Following a surprising $633M worldwide and four Oscar nominations including Best Picture, F1 is officially greenlit for a sequel at Apple Studios. The news comes straight from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, speaking to the BBC at the annual Academy Awards luncheon.
Rumors had been swirling for months about a potential sequel to F1, which starred Brad Pitt as unpredictable veteran racer Sonny Hayes, who takes a hotshot rookie driver under his wing. The film delivered old-school, full-throttle racing thrills, and audiences loved it.
“It was a long journey to get the movie made because we had to endure a couple of strikes — but in the end, the movie entertained audiences around the world,” Bruckheimer said. “I’d never worked with Brad Pitt before, and it was really a thrill to collaborate with him.”
Bruckheimer failed to confirm any plot details or casting, including on the return of Pitt. I think it’s safe to assume Pitt will return, and it would be a huge mistake to move on from Damson Idris as upstart racer Joshua Pearce.
No word on the return of director Joseph Kosinski, either. He’s got a busy slate that includes Miami Vice, an untitled UFO conspiracy thriller, and a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick.
