I told you a few days ago that Disney and Lucasfilm were concerned enough about the lackluster response to the beer commercial parody trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, that they quickly put out a more traditional one. Honestly, that’s the one they should’ve aired during the Super Bowl. Well, “concerns” within Disney haven’t eased up at all, and according to a new Variety report, there’s fear the film may disappoint at the box office.
Internally, The Mandalorian and Grogu is seen as “something of a question mark” and might fail to meet expectations. This comes after the Super Bowl spot “failed to generate the kind of excitement the marketing team was hoping to spark.” No kidding, bro. It sucked.
My doubts about this movie remain the same; will audiences feel they need to pay money for an expansion of the show they already watch on Disney+? Has that ever worked out with any other show? Not really.
On the plus side, Disney/Lucasfilm is bullish on Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling. They see it as “more likely to satisfy fans”, which begs the question, why make The Mandalorian and Grogu at all then? Seriously, if the most popular TV show in Star Wars history can’t satisfy fans on the big screen, something major went wrong.
The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters on May 22nd. Star Wars: Starfighter on May 8th 2027.
