Mamoru Hosada is one of the greatest animation filmmakers in the world, with the Japanese director’s impressive credits including The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Mirai, and 2021’s Belle. Now Hosada is back with his latest ambitious effort, Scarlet, a time-traveling sci-fi epic inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
Scarlet centers on a time-traveling warrior princess on a time-bending quest to avenge her father’s death.
The film premiered at Venice earlier this year to rave reviews. Sony Pictures Classics has given it a release date in select IMAX theaters on February 6th 2026, with a wider rollout one week later.
Mana Ashida, Masaki Okada, and Kôji Yakusho lead the voice cast. Presumably, there will be an English dub by the time it hits theaters.
SYNOPSIS: After failing at her mission and finding herself gravely injured in a surreal world that exists somewhere between life and death, she encounters an idealistic young man from our present day who not only helps her to heal but shows her the possibility of a future free of bitterness and rage. When confronted again by her father’s killer, Scarlet faces her most daunting battle: can she break the cycle of hatred and find meaning in life beyond revenge?
