Russian filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov has focused a large part of his career on stories centered around the dangerous allure of technology and social media. Through his “screenlife” movement, Bekmambetov has directed or produced such films as Unfriended, Searching, and Profile. His biggest Hollywood film in years, Mercy, is a futuristic sci-fi thriller that stars Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson, exploring the potential dangers of AI tech in the criminal justice system.
Amazon MGM Studios has released a new trailer for Mercy, which stars Pratt as a cop in 2029 who has just 90 minutes to prove he’s innocent of murder to an advanced AI judge played by Ferguson.
Also in the cast are Kali Reis, Annabelle Wallis, Chris Sullivan, Kylie Rogers, and Kenneth Choi.
SYNOPSIS: In the near future, a detective (Chris Pratt) stands on trial accused of murdering his wife. He has 90 minutes to prove his innocence to the advanced A.I. Judge (Rebecca Ferguson) he once championed, before it determines his fate.
You can see the influence of Minority Report, and maybe even a little bit of Duncan Jones’ Source Code.
Mercy opens in theaters January 23rd 2026.
