- Weapons– $25M/$89M
So much for my prediction that it would be Together as the summer’s surprise horror hit. Weapons has dominated in its two weeks of release, earning another $25M for $89M domestically. Warner Bros. is killing it with horrors lately, as Final Destination Bloodlines had the same total after two weeks and that ended its run with $285M globally. Weapons already has $148M worldwide and word of mouth is seeing a lot of repeat business. I went to see it again over the weekend, as well, and the theater was more than half full.
2. Freakier Friday– $14.5M/$54.7M
3. Nobody 2 (review)- $9.5M
Well, the attempt to turn Nobody into a franchise seems to have hit a wall. While Nobody 2‘s $9.5M opening is better than its predecessor’s pathetic $6.8M, it’s still pretty bad overall and doesn’t suggest a lot of growth. If Universal Pictures keeps this going, I’d be surprised. Maybe at a lesser budget it could be profitable? The film received solid reviews, with 78% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 89% from audiences, but hardly the scores that suggest a lasting stretch in theaters.
4. The Fantastic Four: First Steps– $8.8M/$247M
Sinking like a stone, The Fantastic Four: First Steps finds itself at $468M worldwide which is a number you’d expect for an Ant-Man movie.
5. The Bad Guys 2– $7.5M/$57.2M
6. Superman– $5.2M/$340.9M
7. The Naked Gun– $4.8M/$41.9M
8. Jurassic World: Rebirth– $2.9M/$332.1M
9. F1: The Movie– $2.6M/$182.8M
10. Coolie– $2.4M
Also…Apple and A24 gave Spike Lee’s latest with Denzel Washington, Highest 2 Lowest (review) a tiny theatrical run in 300 theaters just so it qualifies for the Academy Awards. The film will move to Apple TV+ on September 5th. Why are they hiding this amazing movie from one of the best director/actor duos ever? You got me.
Sony Pictures Classics released the Sundance favorite doc/narrative East of Wall (review) into 626 theaters for $372K. The film about a horse trainer’s struggles in a male-dominated landscape Tabatha and Porshia Zimiga as themselves, along with Jennifer Ehle and Scoot McNairy.
Horror remake Witchboard (review) wasn’t able to capitalize on the genre’s box office success of late. The film from veteran filmmaker Chuck Russell opened with $197K at 580 theaters.
