We’re long overdue for a Sofia Coppola and Kirsten Dunst reunion. Fortunately, we’re about to get one. Dunst revealed to Town & Country that she has boarded Coppola’s next movie with plans to shoot next year.
Coppola and Dunst have been closely linked since 1999’s The Virgin Suicides. Coppola directed her again in Marie Antoinette in 2006, and then 2017’s The Beguiled. Dunst also made a cameo as herself in Coppola’s The Bling Ring in 2013. I think it’s safe to say neither would be where they are without the other.
No plot details are available on the film, but Coppola said last December that she’s currently writing it and will be most of the year.
Coppola’s most recent film was Priscilla, starring Cailee Spaeny as Elvis’ young wife. She has the documentary Marc by Sofia debuting in Venice next month. She’s never done anything to match 2003’s Lost in Translation, and I’m not sure she ever will. That’s a tough film to beat, and is one of my all-time favorites.
Dunst was last seen in Alex Garland’s Civil War. Coming up for her is Derek Cianfrance’s crime dramedy Roofman alongside Channing Tatum. She also has the mermaid film Reptilia opposite Anora Oscar-winner Mikey Madison.
