Is Michael Bay ready to be “More Than Meets The Eye” again? According to Puck, Bay is developing with plans to direct a new Transformers movie. Bay last directed a film in this franchise in 2017, but has stayed involved with it as a producer.
Bay has directed five Transformers live-action movies, with the explosive blockbusters earning nearly $5B overall. But those numbers began to dwindle, and by the time of 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight, the total box office was down to $605M. The franchise continued with Bumblebee, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and last year’s animated prequel Transformers One, but the numbers haven’t rebounded.
Paramount has more Transformers movies on the horizon, including a live-action project from Transformers One director Josh Cooley. Also teased by Rise of the Beasts director Steven Caple was a Transformers/GI Joe crossover, but it remains to be seen if that wishlisted pairing ever happens.
There’s good reason for Bay to tackle the Autobot/Decepticon war again. He’s directed two movies since 2017: Netflix actioner 6 Underground in 2019, and 2022’s Ambulance. Neither film has been well-received. The closest thing to a hit movie that Bay’s had in ages was Pain & Gain‘s $86M in 2013.
