‘Sunrise On The Reaping’: Maya Hawke Cast As Wireess In Next ‘Hunger Games’ Film

As long as Suzanne Collins keeps writing Hunger Games books, Lionsgate will keep making Hunger Games movies. The next one, Sunrise On the Reaping, is a prequel centered on a young Haymitch Abernathy, the drunken mentor and victor played by Woody Harrelson in the original movies. The hook to all of these films, besides the popular novels, is the A-list cast of young stars it assembled. And now we have the latest for the new film with Maya Hawke joining the cast.

Variety reports on Maya Hawke joining Sunrise On the Reaping, taking on the role of Wiress. The character was previously seen played by Amanda Plummer, and is closely related to the character Beetee, who was originally played by Jeffrey Wright. Hawke is best known as the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, and for her role as Robin Buckley in Stranger Things.

She joins a cast led by Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, McKenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee.

Sunrise on the Reaping revisits the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The story centers on 16-year-old Haymitch, a clever and resourceful boy from District 12, who’s unexpectedly chosen for this edition of the games, which will feature a deadly twist: twice the number of tributes, with 48 children sent into the arena to battle for their lives.

Directed by Francis Lawrence, Sunrise On the Reaping opens on November 20th 2026.
