Released five years ago, The Old Guard was one of those early Netflix summer “mockbusters” that proved it could hang with the big studios. The $70M action flick, about a team of do-gooding immortal mercenaries, received strong reviews from fans and critics for its starry cast of Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. A sequel was dialed up a year later, but it has been a very slow process and a long wait for The Old Guard 2, which now has a new teaser.
Based on Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez’s graphic novels, The Old Guard 2 finds Andy/Andromache (Theron) and her team continuing to deal with ghosts of the past that threaten their immortal lives, and when you’re thousands of years old there are a lot of ghosts.
Theron, Layne, Schoenaerts, Ejiofor, Kenzari, Vân Veronica Ngô, and Luca Marinelli reprise their roles from the first film. Joining them this time around are Uma Thurman and Henry Golding. Seeing Thurman in action using a blade is definitely a callback to her Kill Bill glory.
Following in the footsteps of Gina Prince-Bythewood, the sequel has another badass Black female director behind the camera. Victoria Mahoney (Yelling to the Sky) directs from a screenplay by Ruck.
SYNOPSIS: Andy leads immortal warriors against a powerful enemy threatening their group. They grapple with the resurfacing of a long-lost immortal, complicating their mission to safeguard humanity.
The Old Guard 2 hits Netflix on July 2nd.
