Paramount’s adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. There’s no question about that. The bestselling book by Tomi Adeyemi introduces a fictional African kingdom, one full of magic, warriors, powerful rulers, and an oppressed people. It’s not unlike Avatar: The Last Airbender in a lot of ways, and there’s the potential for it to have the same kind of impact. Or perhaps to do for African fantasy what a pair of Black Panther movies did on the big screen.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and co-written by her along with Adyemi, the incredible ensemble includes Thuso Mbedu, Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Lashana Lynch, Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo, Zackary Momoh, and Viola Davis.
The story follows a young woman who embarks on a journey to restore magic to her oppressed people after it was violently stolen away from them by the ruling class.
While Paramount clearly wants to set this as a major epic event, there’s reason for concern. First of all, the January 15th 2027 release date doesn’t exactly scream confidence.
Most concerning is that Adeyemi has distanced herself from the film for unknown reasons. However, in a statement on social media, she said “Since someone asked, I have not seen the film, and I will not watch it.” She continued, “It’s been painful holding this back from you all.”
Adeyemi continued, “I do not mind anyone going to watch the film. I wrote this for us. I fought for us. I’m just laying down my sword and officially separating my name because I can’t keep being hurt and attacked behind the scenes.”
It’s not a good sign because the world Adeyemi has created has millions of fans, and if they think her separation from the film is a bad sign, they won’t turn out. And if that happens, Prince-Bythewood, a fantastic director who is perfect for this material, will be hurt by that, which means fewer movies like this.
So I’m rooting for Children of Blood and Bone to succeed, regardless of the behind-the-scenes drama.
