‘Midnight Vendetta’: Martin Scorsese To Direct 1890 New Orleans Mafia Film

Martin Scorsese has a couple of high-profile projects in the works, neither of which is quite ready to go, and both with Leonardo DiCaprio. There’s Devil in the White City, which has been in the works forever, and the untitled Hawaiian mob movie co-written by and starring Dwayne Johnson. But according to World of Reel‘s sources, Scorsese has another gangster film, tentatively titled Midnight Vendetta, that has a completed script and could be next on his list.

Midnight Vendetta has a screenplay penned by Eric Roth, the Oscar-winning writer known for such great films as Forest Gump, The Insider, Dune, A Star is Born, and more. He also worked with Scorsese on the script for Killers of the Flower Moon.

The story centers on the arrival of the Italian mafia into New Orleans around the late 19th century, the first major foothold of the mob in the United States. The ensuing tensions between the police force and the Italian community culminated in the assassination of Police Chief David Hennessy in 1890. Hennessy blamed his shooting on “Dagoes”, leading to a string of mass lynchings of Italians in 1891.

DiCaprio is reportedly attached to this film, as well, although no deal has been inked. Given that he recently backed out of Damien Chazelle’s Evel Knievel movie, this could be what DiCaprio was making room for.
