Star Wars Celebration is taking place right now in Japan, and going in it was expected we’d learn more about Shawn Levy’s upcoming movie with Ryan Gosling. Lucasfilm didn’t disappoint, as Kathleen Kennedy confirmed the film’s title, Star Wars: Starfighter, and release date of May 28th 2027.
Here’s a description from the official statement: “Star Wars: Starfighter,” which will be directed by Shawn Levy and star Ryan Gosling, is a standalone adventure taking place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.” The film, which will begin production this Fall, is an entirely new adventure featuring all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen yet.
Levy is the director behind last year’s huge Marvel hit, Deadpool & Wolverine, so he’s already a Disney favorite. He’s also one of the creators of Netflix’s Stranger Things. Gosling most recently starred in The Fall Guy.
“This script is so good,” Gosling reportedly said from the stage in Tokyo. “It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Sean.”
“We’re not in development, we’re in pre-production,” Levy explained. “We’re going to start shooting this fall to come out May 2027. It’s a big galaxy out there. And it feels like it’s an opportunity to do a movie that’s not a prequel, that’s not a sequel, and gives us the ‘Star Wars’ DNA that we love, but with an adventure that’s all new.”
