Defying the odds, Doug Liman’s Road House reboot with Jake Gyllenhaal was pretty darn good, and netted over 100M views on Prime Video. Of course, Amazon MGM wants to get moving on a sequel post haste, and according to World of Reel they’ve already found a director. The prolific Guy Ritchie is looking to add the sequel to his already jam-packed slate of projects.
Puck chimes in to confirm the news that Ritchie will direct Road House 2, taking over from Liman. Gyllenhaal will return as Dalton, an ex-MMA fighter turned bouncer at a rowdy Florida bar. Rack another high-profile project on the list for Ritchie, who has potential three films arriving in 2025; Fountain of Youth, Wife & Dog, and In the Grey. Plus he’s got the Paramount+ series MobLand with Tom Hardy that just launched its first season. There’s also a second season of The Gentlemen for Netflix coming up.
For Ritchie and Gyllenhaal this is a reunion from 2023’s The Covenant, which I firmly believe is the best movie either has done in a long time. It’s good to see them back together.
Honestly, this isn’t a complete shock. If you recall, Liman was very upset over Amazon’s decision not to give Road House a theatrical release. The dispute led to a lot of tension during production and now Amazon has decided not to bother bringing Liman back. Those disagreements must’ve been heated for them to make a move like that.
Will anyone else be returning? Conor McGregor seems like a lock to return as psycho baddie Knox. I would like to see Daniel Melchior and Jessica Williams back as the ladies in Dalton’s life, but nothing is set in stone.
At the clip Ritchie is moving it’s all but a certainty that Road House 2 will arrive in 2026. I can’t help but wonder if Amazon MGM will consider a theatrical release now that they have a hit on their hands.
