- A Minecraft Movie (review)- $157M
As predicted, A Minecraft Movie was the shot in the arm the box office needed after weeks of slow numbers. The $157M domestic debut surpasses the $146M of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, breaking the record for a video game movie. Furthermore, it’s the biggest live-action opener ever for star Jack Black, the best single opening weekend since Deadpool & Wolverine, and at $301M worldwide it’s already nipping at the heels of the top 3 video game all-timers. There’s a lesson to be learned here and I’ll be curious to see if studios take note. Minecraft is a current phenomenon that audiences of all ages love RIGHT NOW, not some legacy project reviving films and stars from decades earlier.
