Darth Maul is too tough (and popular) to stay down for long. During a Star Wars Celebration event celebrating two decades of Lucasfilm animation, it was announced that Maul would return for a new animated series, Maul-Shadow Lord, on Disney+ in 2026.
Sam Witwer will return to voice the iconic villain, as he did previously on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. In live-action, he voiced Maul in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Fans in Japan were shown a sneak peek of the series by Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni and VP of animation Athena Portillo.
“Unfortunately I can’t tell you too much, but what I can say is Sam Witwer’s involvement in the show has been pristine,” Portillo said. “I’m very excited about him being able to review the scripts and provide input in all of that as well. Dave Filoni and Sam created the character for animation, and so it’s very important to hear his thoughts as well for the character depth.”
Witwer was on hand and revealed that the series takes place “about a year” after the Clone Wars when Maul is “dusting himself off a bit” after Ahsoka Tano “kicked him to the curb.”
“We learn some different things about this character,” Witwer continued. “He’s got some different traits that you wouldn’t necessarily think he has that make perfect sense from what he’s been through.” [Variety]
