Released in 2010, Tron: Legacy was a legacy sequel to Disney’s 1982 cyberpunk classic starring Jeff Bridges. Now, fifteen years later, that film is getting a legacy sequel of its own in Tron: Ares. While the previous director and most of the cast haven’t returned, the new film does bring back Bridges as Kevin Flynn, while Jared Leto takes the lead role as an advanced program that has escaped the digital world into our own.
The long-awaited sequel is telling a story that was teased in Tron: Legacy, when Sam Flynn brought Quorra into the real world. We never got a proper resolution there, and Tron: Ares is a standalone story with Leto playing a brand new character.
Taking over as director is Joachim Rønning, who has quietly become a staple filmmaker for Disney with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and Young Woman and the Sea. The screenplay is by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne.
Daft Punk’s soundtrack was such a huge part of the last movie, arguably the aspect that drove the film to over $400M worldwide. So Disney was wise to have Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails provide music because they can give the film an individual flavor.
Here’s the synopsis: “TRON: Ares” follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares (Leto), who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.
Joining Leto in the cast are Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Gillian Anderson, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn.
Tron: Ares hits theaters on October 10th. Check out the new trailer below!
