Box Office: Disney’s ‘Snow White’ Off To Sleepy Start With $87M Globally

  1. Snow White (review)- $43M

It was a sleepy debut for Disney’s Snow White with just $43M domestic, placing it among the lowest-grossing ever of their live-action remakes. That number is slightly less than what the disappointing Dumbo movie did in 2019. Overall, the film has $87M worldwide. I would stress not to write it off completely just yet because Disney remakes have a habit of doing well over the long haul despite poor critical reviews and weak opening weekends. A recent example (although not quite a remake) is Mufasa: The Lion King which opened to just $33M but has $253M domestic and is still in theaters after 14 weeks. The poison apples were all baked in the pie long ago, due to criticisms surrounding stars Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. But I would also add that Snow White is a nearly 90-year-old animated classic and a remake isn’t going to be that appealing to younger audiences.

2. Black Bag– $4.4M/$14.8M

Staying put at #2 is Steven Soderbergh’s spy caper Black Bag with $4.4M and $14.8M overall. The Michael Fassbender/Cate Blanchett thriller has $24M globally.

3. Captain America: Brave New World– $4.1M/$192.1M

Sliding up a spot with another $4.1M is Captain America: Brave New World.  Another example of a Disney movie that opened weak but has held steady, the Anthony Mackie-led superhero film has crossed the $400M mark worldwide and should pass Eternals‘ $401M soon if it hasn’t already.

4. Mickey 17– $3.9M/$40.2M

Those numbers aren’t great for Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi comedy Mickey 17 with Robert Pattinson. But what’s worse is Variety‘s reporting that it’ll lose WB approximately $75M. Oof.

5. Novocaine– $3.7M/$15.7M

Taking a steep tumble was last week’s #1 movie, Novocaine, which fell 57% all the way to #5 with $3.7M. Ouch. The action-comedy starring Jack Quaid and Amber Midthunder has $21M worldwide on an $18M budget.

6. The Alto Knights– $3.1M

The long-in-the-works mob drama The Alto Knights opened to just $3.1M, even with the hook of Robert De Niro playing dual roles. Director Barry Levinson has gone a long time without a hit movie, but he’s found success in this genre before with 1991’s Bugsy. That said, WB didn’t have enough faith in the movie to screen it nationwide, which is always a bad sign. It probably wouldn’t have helped considering the 38% RT score from critics and just 70% from audiences.

7. The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie– $1.8M/$6.4M

8. The Monkey– $1.54M/$37.8M

9. Dog Man– $1.5M/$95.6M

10. The Last Supper-$1.3M/$5.3M

Also…The Bill Skarsgard/Anthony Hopkins thriller Locked opened to $964K in just 971 theaters.

The controversial release of Magazine Dreams (review), starring Jonathan Majors in a film originally set for 2023, didn’t amount to much with $700K in 815 theaters. It’s possible there’s enough buzz for Majors’ performance that a wider expansion could help, but doubtful that chance will come.

And Flying Lotus’ well-received sci-fi/horror Ash (review) opened in 1136 sites and earned $716K. The film stars Eiza Gonzalez, Aaron Paul, and Iko Uwais.
