On October 21, 2021, a story dominated headlines and sent social media ablaze. That story was the tragedy that occurred on the set of Rust in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The tragedy that led to Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza both shot, soon after taking Halyna’s life. Adding to the almost unbelievable story was that Alec Baldwin was the one who fired the gun. How could a live bullet end up on a movie set? Furthermore, how could that bullet end up in a live gun being used in a scene?
The unimaginable somehow happened, and undoubtedly rumors ran wild. The social media machine was in full force from the moment news broke through the investigation and subsequent trial. After over a year of various investigations, Alec Baldwin, Assistant Director Dave Halls, and Armorer Hannah Reed Guitierraz had criminal cases brought against them. Last Take: Rust And The Story Of Halyna aims to make sure that the victim at the center of the story, Halyna Hutchins, isn’t forgotten in the media circus that followed the shooting.
Director Rachel Mason both directed and produced Last Take: Rust And The Story Of Halyna. She went forward with the project after being asked by Halyna’s husband, Matt, to create a documentary about Halyna. Mason uses a mix of unseen footage, interviews with cast and crew, and shots from Halyna’s personal videos to not only paint the picture of what happened, but of Halyna and what she meant to those that knew her best. The result is an emotional and extensive look at the tragedy and how things unfolded.
A major part of Rust’s plot deals with an accidental shooting and the aftermath that follows. In a cruel twist, the ideals of the movie played out in real life. From the moment the news broke, Rust ever seeing the light of day seemed pretty farfetched. Fast forward almost four years and the film has been finished and is nearing release.
A term of the settlement between the Hutchins family and Rust producers included that the film be completed. Matt and Halyna’s mother Olga were the driving force behind finalizing the film. They believed that Halyna would have wanted the film finished and for people to see her work. Last Take: Rust And The Story Of Halyna brings a comprehensive view to one of Hollywood’s most unbelievable tragedies and makes sure to do Halyna’s memory justice.
Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna is streaming now on Hulu.
