We call the Academy Awards “our Super Bowl” because it’s the culmination of the film year and a celebration of the best in cinema. But the telecast is also where we honor those who have passed on, both the stars in front of the camera and those behind it who were integral in making the movies we love happen.
Last night’s In Memoriam segment was led by Morgan Freeman, who spoke about his friend and Unforgiven and Under Suspicion co-star Gene Hackman. The two-time Academy Award winner’s death was announced in just the last few days.
This past year, several Hollywood heavyweights have crossed over, including David Lynch, Gena Rowlands, James Earl Jones, Maggie Smith, and Louis Gossett Jr.
Of course, there are always a few names that get left out of the presentation, including Michelle Trachtenberg, Tony Todd, Morgan Spurlock, and Chance Perdomo. I understand that some get left out due to time, but maybe a bit less of the Dune sandworm playing the piano could’ve allowed some of these fallen stars to get recognized.
