Minecraft is the highest-selling video game of all-time, even more than Tetris and Super Mario Bros. But can it also become the best-selling video game movie of all-time? It’s got some tough competition as Sonic the Hedgehog has really been running circles around everybody the last few years.
The final trailer for A Minecraft Movie is here, and it’s clear that it’s aiming to reach every conceivable audience. Parents who might play the game casually but need something kid-friendly, hardcore gamers, and Jason Momoa superfans. That’s fair. Warner Bros. and Legendary don’t care where you fit in as long as you buy a ticket.
And to be honest, this looks kind of fun and I appreciate the emphasis on “creativity” as the means of saving the world from those looking to stifle it. Since creativity and imagination are at the heart of the Minecraft game, it makes a lot of sense and is a unique way to present the good vs. evil dynamic.
So, along with Jason Momoa and Jason Momoa’s hair, the cast includes Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon, and Jemaine Clement. Black can’t get enough of video game movies lately, having starred in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the unfortunate Borderlands.
The film is directed by Jared Hess, best known for Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre.
SYNOPSIS: Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks)—are dealing with everyday problems when they suddenly get pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld. This bizarre, cubic wonderland thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll need to master this world and protect it from evil creatures like Piglins and Zombies. They’ll embark on a magical quest with an unexpected expert crafter, Steve (Black). Their adventure will challenge them to be bold and reconnect with their unique creative skills, which are essential for thriving in the real world.
A Minecraft Movie hits theaters on April 5th.
