The last time we had a feature film from Charlie Kaufman it was 2020’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things. Frankly, that’s too damn long. Fortunately, news has arrived about his next project, Later the War, and the impressive cast he’s putting together.
According to Deadline, Kaufman has cast Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne, Tessa Thompson, and Patsy Ferran in Later the War. It’s the first time Kaufman has worked with them.
The film is based on Iddo Gefen’s short story Debby’s Dream House, and it sounds right up Kaufman’s alley, following “a man who manufactures dreams for people but ultimately begins creating nightmares for them.”
Kaufman has dealt taken a surreal approach to the subjects of memory, perception, and love in such films as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Anomalisa, and Synecdoche, New York.
Redmayne won the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in The Theory of Everything. He was most recently seen in the series remake of The Day of the Jackal, which just got a second season renewal. Thompson was last seen in Creed III and The Marvels, while Ferran has a role in Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17.
Hopefully, this means more details on Kaufman’s latest are right around the corner.
