A classic love triangle is reborn in modern times in Young Werther, a contemporary remake of Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s 18th-century novel The Sorrows of Young Werther. The new film by writer/director José Lourenço stars Douglas Booth, Alison Pill, and Patrick J. Adams, and judging by the new trailer they’ll be having a lot more fun than the the people in Goethe’s tragic romance.
Booth stars as Werther, who falls in love with the charming Charlotte while visiting Toronto. The only problem is she’s already engaged to be married to the emotionally distant Albert. Werther then takes it upon himself to prove to Charlotte that she should be with him instead of Albert.
We also see Iris Apatow as Charlotte’s younger sister who has developed feelings for Arthur, as well, even though she knows it’ll never work.
Lourenco has put together quite the cast for his biggest film yet. Booth is probably best known for starring in 2013’s Romeo & Juliet and his breakout role as Boy George in Worried About the Boy. Pill has become a fan favorite for her roles in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and The Newsroom. The long-running series Suits turned Patrick J. Adams into a star for his performance as Mike Ross. And of course, Apatow is the daughter of Judd Apatow and has appeared recently in The Bubble and the series Unstable.
Young Werther opens in theaters and digitally on December 13th by Lionsgate.
