‘Wolfs’: Jon Watts Believes A Sequel To The George Clooney/Brad Pitt Action-Comedy Is Dead

Even with A-list stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt, along with Spider-Man director Jon Watts, $200M is a lot to spend on a buddy comedy. And perhaps that is why Apple is having second thoughts about a sequel to Wolfs (review here), despite one being announced just a couple of months ago.

The news comes directly from Watts himself, who said to Collider

“I don’t know what I’m directing next, and I don’t think there’s going to be a ‘Wolfs’ sequel.”

Watts has been making the rounds for his Star Wars: Skeleton Crew series that hits Disney+ in a few days.

But Wolfs was supposed to be his next big thing. The action-comedy about two lone wolf fixers forced to team up was released by Apple back in September. Initially, it was going to get a full theatrical release. Sometime along the way Apple started to get cold feet. They considered making it an Apple TV+ exclusive, but were convinced to keep a limited theatrical run that ended up only lasting one week. Pitt and Clooney reportedly gave up a chunk of their hefty salary for to get even that.

So what’s changed? Wolfs wasn’t exactly well-received upon its release. On Rotten Tomatoes it has a mediocre 66% with critics and just 50% on the Popcornmeter. It’s possible the film hasn’t done well on streaming, either.

We should take Watts’ comments as gospel because he wouldn’t put that out there, otherwise. Unfortunately, for those who love seeing the Pitt and Clooney pairing it’ll have to be in something other than Wolfs 2.
