It was diminishing returns for Warner Bros. and their once-successful Lego franchise. So following 2019’s disappointing The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, they struck a new deal with Universal Pictures in 2020. Finally, the studio is ready to show what they can do with the popular toy brand and has hired a trio of top directors for new movies through 2025, so they need to get cracking.
Universal has announced that Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins, and Joe Cornish will direct live-action Lego movies. And these need to get moving quickly, so we might start learning more details soon. Here’s what we know so far:
Kasdan is the director behind the successful Jumanji sequels, and the upcoming holiday action-comedy Red One. His Lego film has a script by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul (The D Train), based on an original idea and a previous draft by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows.
Jenkins is, of course, the director behind the recent Wonder Woman movies with Gal Gadot, but her Lego film is unlikely to be DC-related. It’s based on a script that she wrote with former DC Entertainment chief and comic book writer Geoff Johns.
Finally, Cornish is the director best known for Attack the Block. His Lego movie is being rewritten by Heather Anne Campbell (Rick & Morty) from an original treatment by Simon Rich (Man Seeking Woman).
It’s unclear how these filmmakers envision live-action Lego movies. We also don’t know if their films will be connected as part of a franchise or cinematic universe, but announcing them all at the same time makes it sound like they will be. [Deadline]
