Godzilla Minus One (review) wasn’t just a box office success around the world, it was the most critically-acclaimed Godzilla movie ever. Period. The damn thing won an Oscar for chrissakes, and is back in theaters right now for a 70th-anniversary celebration. It was inevitable that Toho would move ahead on a sequel, and now it’s official.
The news comes via an “Emergency Announcement” teaser designed to resemble a warning of Godzilla’s arrival to stomp your town. What we know about the sequel is that it will bring back director Takashi Yamizaki, who will also write script and lead the VFX team. Otherwise, we have no title, no casting, no start date, and no eventual release date. Will we get to see more of Kōichi and Noriko?
Godzilla Minus One premiered in October 2023, and had its U.S. premiere two months later. The film would receive critical acclaim globally, while also becoming the highest-grossing Godzilla movie ever with $118M worldwide. It would also win Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards, while also winning eight awards at the Japanese Academy Film Prize.
So stay tuned. All eyes are going to be on Godzilla’s return this time. Toho won’t be able to catch audiences by surprise.
