‘Maria’ Trailer: Pablo Larraín’s Trilogy Of Dramas Concludes With Angelina Jolie As Opera Legend Maria Callas

So it seems like all of the movies that shined at the Middleburg Film Festival over the weekend are dropping trailers. The latest is for Pablo Larrain’s Maria, the third in his trilogy of dramas about powerful, tragic, iconic women, preceded by Spencer starring Kristen Stewart and Jackie with Natalie Portman. In this one, Angelina Jolie stars as legendary opera singer Maria Callas, retired and living in Paris, as she looks back at her life and weighs a possible comeback.

As seen in the new trailer, Maria has the elegant beauty we’ve come to expect from Larrain. The filmmaker has gotten great performances from his actresses, already some of the best in the world, and Jolie’s is no different. In my early review, I talk about Jolie doing the best work of her career on the way to an inevitable Best Actress nomination. These movies are made by their leading ladies, and you’ll want to see Jolie as the influential prima donna soprano.

Joining Jolie in the cast are Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Valeria Golino, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Haluk Bilginer.

SYNOPSIS: Academy Award-winner Angelina Jolie is Maria Callas, one of the most iconic performers of the 20th century in acclaimed director Pablo Larrain’s operatic MARIA. The film follows the American-Greek soprano as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye. MARIA reimagines the legendary soprano in her final days as the diva reckons with her identity and life.

Netflix releases Maria in select theaters on November 27th, before hitting the streamer on December 11th.
