‘The Hunt For Gollum’: Orlando Bloom Says He’s Spoken With Andy Serkis About A Return As Legolas

A new Lord of the Rings movie is in the works, titled The Hunt for Gollum, with Andy Serkis set to direct and reprise his role as the ring-obsessed villain. Not only that, but Peter Jackson is aboard as a producer, with Ian McKellen expected to return as Gandalf. As it’s looking more and more like the band is getting back together again, another LOTR actor is eyeing a comeback of his own.

Speaking with Variety, Orlando Bloom talked about potentially returning as the elven archer, Legolas, and confirmed he’s spoken with Serkis about how to make that happen…

“I really don’t know what [they are planning],” Bloom said. “I did speak to Andy [Serkis] and he did say they were thinking about how to do things. I was like, ‘How would that even work?’ And he was like, ‘Well, A.I.!’ and I was like, ‘Oh, OK!’ It was a pretty magical time in my life, and it’s one of those things where there’s not a downside to it.”

Bloom starred as Legolas in Jackson’s original LOTR trilogy, then reprised the role again in 2013’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. It would probably take a combination of AI and de-aging tech for Bloom to return and not look like Legolas had aged significantly. Elves don’t do that wrinkly thing.

Meanwhile, Bloom is earning strong reviews for his latest film, The Boxer, which just had its world premiere at TIFF last week.
