Good news, local cinephiles! Emilia Perez, one of the year’s most acclaimed films and a Cannes award winner that many see as the Best Picture frontrunner, will be the Spotlight at next month’s Middleburg Film Festival. You won’t want to miss it. Jacques Audiard (Rust & Bone, A Prophet) directs Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and Edgar Ramírez in the musical comedy about the connection between four women seeking happiness, among them an unappreciated attorney and a cartel boss.

SYNOPSIS: “From renegade auteur Jacques Audiard comes Emilia Pérez, an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations. Through liberating song and dance and bold visuals, this odyssey follows the journey of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. The fearsome cartel leader Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón) enlists Rita (Zoe Saldaña), an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, to help fake her death so that Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self. Emilia Perez opens in select theaters on November 1st, followed by Netflix on November 13th. But you can see it early at Middleburg from Oct. 17th-20th.
