Box Office: ‘Despicable Me 4’ Lights Up July 4th Weekend With $229M Debut

  1. Despicable Me 4 (review)- $75M/$122.6M

It was all fireworks for Illumination and Universal as Despicable Me 4 lit up the Independence Day weekend with $75M, with $122M across the five days. Despite a franchise low 53% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, Gru and the Minions are pretty much untouchable with audiences, as they have been since the beginning of the $5B+ franchise. Internationally, it added another $106.9M for a grand total of $229.5M worldwide.

2. Inside Out 2– $30M/$533.8M

Animation ruled the top 2 slots at the box office this weekend. After three weeks, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 dropped a notch, but that’s okay. Disney is sure to be all in their feelings about the critically-acclaimed sequel’s $1.2B haul after such a short time in theaters.

3. A Quiet Place: Day One– $21M/$94.3M

In its second weekend, A Quiet Place: Day One fell 60% for just $21M domestically, as it had a tough time making noise against two crowd-pleasing animated hits. Globally, the horror prequel has $178.1M.

4. MaXXXine (review)- $6.7M

While a $6.7M opening weekend might not seem like a lot for Ti West and Mia Goth’s sleazy crime horror MaXXXine, it ranks as the highest debut of the franchise. Perhaps that’s due to the star-studded cast which includes the likes of Giancarlo Esposito, Halsey, and Kevin Bacon, or it shows growing interest in do-or-die Hollywood starlet Maxine Minx. Could West and A24 be convinced to keep it going for longer when fans are more invested than ever?

5. Bad Boys: Ride or Die– $6.5M/$177.3M

6. Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1– $5.4M/$22.1M

7. Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot– $3.2M/$6.8M

8. Kalki 2898 AD– $1.8M/$7.3M

9. The Bikeriders– $1.3M/$19.3M

10. Kinds of Kindness– $860K/$3.8M
