Another year, another Edge of Tomorrow sequel update. Well, perhaps “update” is too strong of a word, because it doesn’t ever seem to be going anywhere. And this one, from director Doug Liman no less, isn’t much different.
Speaking with Empire, Liman talked about Edge of Tomorrow 2, a sequel to the acclaimed 2014 sci-fi film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Liman doesn’t offer much of an update, but at least he says the film isn’t dead yet.
“No, we keep talking about it,” said Liman. “We love that world.”
By “we” he means Cruise, the principal driver of every project he takes on. And he has been the one mainly talking about a sequel since 2015, although Liman has been chatty, too. Multiple writers have boarded the project, including Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse (Race), Jez Butterworth (Ford v Ferrari), and Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying). Delays have continued to hamper progress, though, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Cruise and Blunt’s busy schedule doesn’t help, either.
If the film does happen, it will be after a wait of more than a decade. That’s a long time, but Liman thinks it could work out the way it’s worked out for James Cameron…
“I don’t know how long [James] Cameron took with his ‘Terminators,’ but at the time it felt like a long time,” Liman said.
Another contributing factor? Edge of Tomorrow wasn’t a massive hit. With a budget of $175M+, the $370M box office doesn’t look so hot. And a sequel would be “too expensive” according to Blunt.
