This story is bizarre. So check this out: you remember how Doug Liman was pissed at Amazon MGM for not releasing his Road House remake in theaters, choosing to make it a Prime Video exclusive? It’s the main reason why he didn’t return to direct the upcoming sequel. Well, Liman isn’t letting this thing go, and has decided to do his own Road House sequel, titled Road House: Dylan.
Seriously. This is a thing that’s happening. Deadline reports that Liman is developing the film with author and original writer R. Lance Hill, who wrote a direct sequel to the 1989 classic starring Patrick Swayze.
Funny thing is, this is just the tip of the iceberg. You might be asking yourself how the Hell can there be two Road House sequels in the works from two camps that dislike one another? Well, it’s because Hill claims he has regained the rights to his original Road House screenplay in 2023 under Section 203 of the U.S. Copyright Act, which allows creators to reclaim copyrights after 35 years, unless it was a “work for hire.” Hill says that he wrote it independently, Amazon disagrees. Expect a legal battle to ensue.
Meanwhile, Amazon MGM keeps chugging along on Road House 2, with Jake Gyllenhaal returning, Dave Bautista, Aldis Hodge, and Leila George co-starring, and Ilya Naishuller directing.
This is going to get nuts. What if we end up with two competing Road House movies with different Dylans? How long before both sides make up and do a crossover with a Dylan v. Dylan barroom brawl to the death?
