It’s safe to say that DC had a rough 2023. All of the movies failed spectacularly, leading to the end of the DCEU and the launch of the DCU led by James Gunn. But while Gunn planned a reboot, he made it known that Blue Beetle was one film he wanted to see continue on, along with star Xolo Maridueña as the superhero. Well, we now know how that’s going to happen, and it won’t be on the big screen…for now.
Deadline reports that Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are developing a Blue Beetle animated series that will pick up from events in the movie, but then spin out to create a new story. Miguel Puga (The Casagrandes) is behind the project and will serve as director and showrunner, with Cristian Martinez (Good Trouble) set as writer.
The original movie’s director Angel Manuel Soto returns as exec-producer, along with the film’s writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.
As for Maridueña and others in the cast, they aren’t locked in for voice roles yet but Warner Bros. is aiming to make that happen. Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Becky G, and Harvey Guillén starred in the first movie.
So when can we look forward to seeing Blue Beetle again? That much is still unclear, but assuming the series is a success, expect to see the character appear in live-action form at some point.
