1. IF (review)- $35M
John Krasinski’s star filled directorial foray in the family film seems to be a success. Sure, not one of the $100M opening weekend successes we used to use as a metric for the medium but a success just the same.
2. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes– $26M/$101.2M
3. The Strangers: Chapter 1– $12M
The first of three films (that have all already been shot) didn’t light up the world this weekend but things certainly could have been worse. While the reviews don’t bode well for continued success it will end up being up to audiences whether or not this release strategy was genius or insanity.
4. The Fall Guy– $8.4M/$62.9M
5. Challengers– $2.9M/$43.5M
6. Back to Black (review)– $2.8M
A lead who nails her role wasn’t enough to bring the Amy Winehouse biopic in to an opening inside the top 5. While the release was somewhat limited in that it was only in half the theaters of this weekends top film I still would have expected much bigger numbers.
7. Tarot– $2M/$15.4M
8. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire- $1.7M/$194.4M
9. The Blue Angels– $1.3M
10. Unsung Hero– $1M/$19M
