Three years after directing No Time to Die, Cary Fukunaga is back. Deadline reports Fukunaga will direct ’77 Blackout, a rogue cop crime thriller set to star the awesome duo of Tom Hardy and Mahershala Ali.
Written by Frank John Hughes with revisions by Fukunaga, ’77 Blackout follows a group of rogue police officers who decide to rob the Hong Kong Triads, the Italian Mafia, and the Harlem Mob during the most infamous city-wide power outage in New York City history.
Fukunaga’s had a tough go of it lately. Since directing Daniel Craig’s final Bond film, he has faced sexual misconduct allegations and was scrubbed from the promotion of Apple series Masters of the Air. Prior to this, Fukunaga earned critical acclaim for his films Sin Nombre, Jane Eyre (the only version of this story I like), and Beasts of No Nation. He also directed the award-winning first season of True Detective, a series that Ali would join in its third season with Fukunaga as an exec-producer.
Coming up for Hardy is Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders, which many think is poised for some awards season love. Ali was last seen in Netflix’s hit Leave the World Behind, and has been attached to Marvel’s Blade film for years.
