Box Office: ‘Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Strong With $129M Globally

  1. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (review)- $56.5M

For this Mother’s Day weekend, families took Mom to brunch and to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The fourth film in the reboot franchise topped the weekend with $56.5M domestically, which makes it the second highest-grossing of the bunch. With another $72M internationally, the film opened with $129M worldwide. It’s a strong start considering the lack of a big name director and no A-list stars, most notably Andy Serkis. But I think more than anything this cements Wes Ball as a go-to blockbuster filmmaker, following the successful Maze Runner trilogy.

2. The Fall Guy– $13.7M/$49.6M

After two weeks, The Fall Guy has surpassed the $100M globally. The film earned $13.7M in the U.S., slipping 50% from last week, which is pretty good. I maintain that reports of this movie’s demise are premature. The reviews were excellent and that seems to be translating into solid week-to-week numbers.

3. Challengers– $4.6M/$38M

4. Tarot– $3.4M/$12M

5. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire– $2.5M/$191.8M

6. Unsung Hero– $2.2M/$16.7M

7. Kung Fu Panda 4– $2M/$191.1M

The best hold of the week with only a 20% drop was Kung Fu Panda 4, which after 10 weeks has $191M domestically and $529M worldwide.

8. Civil War– $1.8M/$65.2M

9. Star Wars: Episode I-The Phantom Menace– $1.5M/$12M

10. Abigail– $1.1M/$24.7M
