Any time Yorgos Lanthimos has a new movie, it’s an exciting time. Whatever one things of Poor Things, it was one of the most creative movies of the year and deserved every one of it’s four Academy Award victories. Fortunately for us, we don’t have to wait long for Lanthimos’ next film, Kinds of Kindness, another reunion with star Emma Stone set to open this summer.
Lanthimos has surrounded Stone with a cast that includes Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, Margaret Qualley, Mamoudou Athie, Joe Alwyn, and Hunter Schafer. The filmmaker, who co-wrote the script with Efthimis Filippou, has described it as “a contemporary film, set in the US – three different stories, with four or five actors who play one part in each story”.
And now we are getting an official synopsis to go along with the first trailer, which reveals a very different kind of movie than Poor Things or The Favourite, set to the sound of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”.
Here’s the synopsis: KINDS OF KINDNESS is a triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.
Searchlight Pictures will release Kinds of Kindness on June 21st.
