Greta Gerwig Hasn’t Closed Door On ‘Barbie’ Sequel: “I Want To Do It”

Over the weekend, Barbie was nearly shut out at the Oscars with just a single win for Best Original Song. The highest-grossing movie of 2023 was largely dismissed by voters, but unlike the other winners it’s the only one that has people talking about a sequel. While Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie has played down the idea of a sequel, we know that Warner Bros. wants one to happen and some discussions have already taken place. But even if it were to happen, could Gerwig be convinced to return?

Deadline spoke with Gerwig at an Oscars afterparty, and while she said she initially wasn’t “feeling” the idea of a Barbie sequel, she’s starting to come around to it…

“I’m not dismissing it; I want to do it,” Gerwig said.

There’s a lot that would need to happen before anything moves forward, such as casting, scheduling (Robbie and Gosling are hella busy), and approval by Mattel.

“If” the stars align and we end up getting “Barbie 2,” it will take a couple of years to get put together,” Gerwig added.

So this could take a while, and let’s not forget that Gerwig is already locked in to direct two Chronicles of Narnia adaptations for Netflix. Those could take a long time and sap a lot of Gerwig’s creative energy. I’m not convinced Barbie 2 ever becomes a thing, at least not with all of the same people from before, but that would be leaving a lot of money on the table.
