Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander met during the filming of 2014’s The Light Between Oceans. They’ve been together ever since, falling in love during production of Derek Cianfrance’s mostly-forgettable drama. Now married, the two have yet to star in another film together, but that’s about to change.
Deadline reports that Fassbender and Vikander will star in Hope, the latest film from South Korean director Na Hong-Jin. The story centers on the residents of a harbor town who make a mysterious discovery on the outskirts, then must fight for survival against something they have never encountered before. While Fassbender and Vikander will be speaking English, the film will mainly be in Korean language.
Hong-Jin is known for his acclaimed films The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, and 2016’s The Wailing.
Coming up for Fassbender is Taika Waititi’s soccer comedy Next Goal Wins. Vikander has Firebrand from director Karim Aïnouz.
No word on when Hope begins shooting, but it’s good to see Fassbender and Vikander back on the big screen together.
Hong-Jin had this to say about the casting news: “Oftentimes, a person’s goodwill can lead to unintended catastrophe simply because of differences in perspective. My hope for this film is to cinematically capture that phenomenon in a way that has yet to be seen.“
