Live-Action ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ Is Taking Flight, Dean DeBlois To Direct

After three Oscar-nominated movies, three successful animated series, multiple short films, comic books, and more, Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon is making the leap to live-action. THR reports that Dean DeBlois, the creative force behind the animated trilogy, will write, direct, and produce a live-action reboot for Universal Pictures.

DeBlois’ will make his live-action directing debut on the films, which will adapt the trilogy that began with 2010’s How to Train Your Dragon and concluded with 2019’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. All three were showered with accolades and made a heap at the box office. Each was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, while the franchise has made $1.6B worldwide.

Universal understands what they potentially have on their hands here, and are confident enough to have already set a May 14th 2025 release date.

Casting is getting underway, which means we could soon know who will play the live-action version of Hiccup. Jay Baruchel voiced the viking protagonist in all three movies, but he’s far too old to actually play the role. Perhaps Baruchel can play one of the elder members of the clan?
