Netflix is sending Adam Sandler into space. The rock solid relationship between Sandler and the streamer continues with an adaptation of Jaroslav Kalfar’s 2017 novel The Spaceman of Bohemia, which promises to be very different from his goofy comedies for Netflix such as Hubie Halloween, Murder Mystery, and The Week Of.
Ignore the silly title, because The Spaceman of Bohemia is more along the lines of a drama, and will be directed by Emmy-winning Chernobyl filmmaker Johan Renck. The story, adapted by Colby Day, follows an “astronaut (Sandler) sent to the edge of the galaxy to collect mysterious ancient dust. He soon finds his earthly life falling to pieces and he turns to the only voice who can help him try to put it back together. It just so happens to belong to a creature from the beginning of time lurking in the shadows of his ship.”
Also on board the currently-untitled film are producers Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin. No word if Tatum will want to get in on this as an actor, too.
This sounds potentially awesome and weird, with Sandler flexing his dramatic muscles in a way he’s rarely done for Netflix. Could we be looking at Sandler’s next Uncut Gems or Punch-Drunk Love? [Deadline]
