‘Hellboy: The Crooked Man’ Heads Straight To Digital On October 8th

Is this good or bad? Hellboy: The Crooked Man, a back-to-basics franchise reboot of the Hellboy movies, is skipping a theatrical release and heading straight to digital on October 8th.

Jack Kesy (Black Tom Cassidy in Deadpool 2) takes over the role of Hellboy, the red-skinned, brick-handed hero created by comic book author Mike Mignola. Mignola co-wrote the screenplay with Christopher Golden.

Directed by Brian Taylor (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance) and starring Jack Kesy in the title role, Hellboy: The Crooked Man is set in the 1950s as the big red guy and the BPRD take on a coven of witches led by a supernatural villain known as the Crooked Man.

Kesy is joined in the cast by Martin Bassindale, Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Joseph Marcell, and Leah McNamara.

SYNOPSIS: In the 1950s, Rookie BPRD agent Bobbie Jo Song is tasked with delivering a spider to the BPRD, but must seek Hellboy’s help when things go awry. Together, they travel to Appalachia to take on the Crooked Man, who has been sent back to Earth to collect souls for the devil.

So I ask again, is this good or bad? Hellboy fans have been hoping to see the character reclaim some glory of the past Guillermo Del Toro movies, and to move past the terrible attempted reboot with David Harbour. But it’s clear The Crooked Man is a lower-budgeted effort, with more of a grounded storyline. Streaming might be where it’s best situated as far as expectations go.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man can be preordered from Amazon Prime Video here.
