Next ‘Spider-Man’ Film Officially In The Works With ‘Shang-Chi’ Director Destin Daniel Cretton

Well, the speculation is over. Not only is Spider-Man 4 officially in the works at Marvel Studios, after some legit question if that would happen or not, but we also know that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is in talks to direct.

THR has the news on Cretton possibly taking over as director of Spider-Man 4. The news is somewhat surprising since Cretton dropped out of directing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (now titled Avengers: Doomsday) and seemed to be moving away from Marvel, not towards it. Meanwhile, other directors were rumored for the job, such as Sam Raimi, Justin Lin, Drew Goddard, and Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.

Tom Holland is expected to return as Peter Parker, picking up on the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home which totally altered the wallcrawler’s status quo. Deals for Holland and co-stars including Zendaya have not yet been finalized.  And that goes for past Spider-Man actors Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, who were such a big part of No Way Home‘s success.

Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are writing the script. Cretton takes over for Jon Watts who directed the previous three movies, but has moved on to projects outside of Marvel including Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and Wolfs. The hope is for Cretton to begin shooting early next year.

Cretton’s most notable films include Short Term 12, The Glass Castle, and Just Mercy, all of which featured Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson. Could she factor into Spidey’s next story, too?
