Review: ‘Folktales’

Joyful And Rewarding Coming-Of-Age Doc In The Norwegian Wilderness

Hege learns to howl in FOLKTALES

In the controversial 2006 documentary, Jesus Camp, kids seeking personal fulfillment and growth turned to a charismatic Christian summer camp for guidance. That film’s directors, Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, go in a vastly different direction with their latest, the feel-good coming-of-age doc Folktales, in which Norwegian kids going through a “gap year” take steps towards adulthood through nature, community, and dogsledding in the frigid Norwegian wilderness. It’s a rewarding experience that benefits from being seen with others close to your heart and, if possible, others who have a fondness for our canine friends.

I have to admit to being a bit obsessed with this movie since it premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. I was unable to catch up with the film there, but have been looking into it and the school at its center, Pasvik Folk High School. Spurred on by the promo image featuring a young woman and her Husky companion looking about as happy as two beings could possibly be, it just looked like the kind of film that would warm your heart. These days, it’s always a bit concerning when a doc takes a deep dive into any institution because you fear some horrible discovery, some corruption or rot beneath the surface. Folktales is definitely NOT that. The wholesomeness and hopefulness are its greatest perk, so much that you can forgive it for not being particularly deep.

So what is a folk high school? Well, they sound like something I would’ve benefitted from myself as a teen, and I bet there will be an uptick in interest from others after this movie. Originally established in 1840 Scandinavia, folk high schools were a way to give rural residents a free education. Now, it serves to give students who enroll a way to get back to the primal basics of life, away from external forces such as cell phones and social media, before heading into their adult lives.

Smartly, Folktales doesn’t stretch its focus too far, instead centering on three teens with differing social problems. The first and most interesting is 19-year-old Hege, whose cherubic face adorns much of the film’s marketing. It takes a while before we see that smile, though. Still grieving the murder of her father, Hege is a bundle of anxiety and indecision. When we first meet her, she’s contemplating how to bring seven mascaras (!!!) on this excursion into Mother Nature.  She’s constantly on her phone, chatting with friends and scrolling her life away as a means of escaping reality.

There’s also the young men; Romain, who suffers from pretty severe social anxiety and insecurity; and Bjørn, a lanky young man and self-professed nerd who has been told he’s annoying so much he’s come to internalize it. Aided by their tough but nurturing teachers, these three learn to do things they never could’ve imagined, such as building fires, constructing shelters, skinning animals, and, of course, dogsledding.

It’s the canines, most Alaskan huskies, who steal the show. These are gorgeous, expressive animals with personalities of their own. The dogs are key to the growth of these students. Not only do they teach them how to care for another living creature, but they help to teach them patience. Because each animal is so different from others in the pack, it also aids the students in learning how to accept themselves for who they are. It’s okay to be different from others as long as you’re being yourself.

Hege has the greatest arc by far, and Folktales centers most of its attention on her. It helps that she’s the chattiest of the group, too. She’s unafraid to share her feelings, and it’s truly heartening to watch her blossom from a sullen girl to a bold, fearless woman who later admits that she’s never on the phone anymore. Romain and Bjørn’s stories don’t get as much attention, but it’s lovely how their stories intertwine as they become friends, discovering how much they have in common.

The wilderness adventures are compelling and a little bit scary. You fear the students’ possible failure as much as they do. There’s an extended sequence, near the end of the term, when they must spend a few nights camping outside, surviving with only the companionship of their canine pal. It’s in these moments that we see the evolution each of them has experienced. We also get some truly heartwarming stuff like Romain’s dog trying to snuggle up into his sleeping bag. It’s a shame that more time wasn’t given to this turning point trial, but what we get is thrilling. The same goes for the dogsledding sequences, which are shot from perspectives that puts you right at the reins. Gorgeous cinematography capturing the emerald night sky is so immersive, it’s like you’re there feeling the warmth of the fire against the bite of the icy air.

Folktales is a wonderful, evocative movie with real-life coming-of-age stories happening right in front of you. The inclusion of the Norse myth about the three Norns, deities who guide the fates of humans, is probably one high-minded idea too many, but that’s okay. There are simple joys to be found here and they shouldn’t be missed. The joy of watching young people transform, overcome life’s challenges, and find that thing that completes them.

Folktales is open in theaters now from Magnolia Pictures.

‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’ Trailer: England’s Loudest And Most Punctual Band Is Together Again

SPINAL TAP II: THE END CONTINUES arrives on September 12th

Released in 1984, This is Spinal Tap revolutionized the mockumentary genre. So many films have borrowed liberally from it that it’s easy to forget just how funny and original it was, with quotes and performances that will live on forever. Can the sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, possibly hope to measure up? We’re about to find out as the band is back together again.

The first trailer for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues is here, featuring the return of director Rob Reiner and stars Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer as the fictional metal band.  You can expect a slew of celebrity guest stars, too, such as Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood who appear as themselves.

SYNOPSIS: “Forty-one years after the release of the groundbreaking mockumentary ‘This Is Spinal Tap,’ the now estranged bandmates David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls (McKean, Guest, and Shearer) are forced to reunite for one final concert. ‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’ also marks the resurrection of documentarian Marty Di Bergi (Reiner), who once again tries to capture his favorite metal gods as they contemplate mortality — and the hope that their 12th drummer doesn’t join them in The Great Beyond. Joined by music royalty Paul McCartney and Elton John, Spinal Tap wrestles with their checkered past to put on a concert that they hope will solidify their place in the pantheon of rock ’n’ roll.”

Also in the cast are Paul Shaffer, David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, Derek Smalls, Fran Drescher, Don Lake, John Michael Higgins, Nina Conti, Griffin Matthews, Kerry Godliman, and Chris Addison.

Bleecker Street is fully committed to Spinal Tap at the moment. Not only is Bleecker Street the sequel’s distributor, but it is re-releasing into theaters a newly restored edition of the 1984 classic which will then be made available digitally.

This could be the first hit film for Reiner in decades. He had such an incredible run in the ’80s and ’90s with Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues opens on September 12th.

Dave Franco and Alison Brie in TOGETHER

NEON is going all-in with the hype for the acclaimed body horror, Together, and why shouldn’t they with many critics proclaiming it the horror event of the summer? You can count me among those who sing the film’s praises. And now the second trailer this month, the “final” one apparently, has arrived for the latest pairing of real-life couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco.

Together really leans on Brie and Franco’s chemistry, as the film centers on a longtime couple who leave the city for the countryside, leaving them utterly dependent on one another to a horrifying degree.

The film is directed by Michael Shanks from his own screenplay. Also in the cast are Damon Herriman and Mia Morrissey.

SYNOPSIS: Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie (Dave Franco and Alison Brie) find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other. With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love, and their flesh.

‘Five Nights At Freddy’s 2’ Trailer: The Creepy Animatronics Are Back And On The Move

FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S 2 hits theaters on December 5th

It’s been a rough 2025 so far for Blumhouse, with Wolf Man, M3GAN 2.0, The Woman in the Yard, and Drop all failing to catch on with audiences. But there’s hope that a slice of pizza and some creepy animatronics will turn things around. The new trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has arrived, and there’s reason for optimism. The previous film was the highest-grossing horror of 2023 and an all-timer for Blumhouse, despite being released simultaneously in theaters and streaming.

This time around, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 gets an exclusive theatrical release in December. Emma Tammi returns to direct from a script by Scott Cawthon, creator of the bestselling horror video game franchise from which the film is based.

Josh Hutcherson returns as ex-Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza night security guard Mike Schmidt, with Elizabeth Lail as police officer Vanessa, and Piper Rubio as Abby, Mike’s younger sister who is in the dark about the fate of her animatronic friends that tried to kill them all in the last movie. Mathew Lillard returns as serial killer William Afton. Skeet Ulrich, Mckenna Grace, Wayne Knight, and Teo Briones have joined the fun, too.

SYNOPSIS: One year has passed since the supernatural nightmare at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The stories about what transpired there have been twisted into a campy local legend, inspiring the town’s first ever Fazfest. Former security guard Mike (Josh Hutcherson) and police officer Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) have kept the truth from Mike’s 11-year-old sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), concerning the fate of her animatronic friends. But when Abby sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, it will set into motion a terrifying series of events, revealing dark secrets about the true origin of Freddy’s, and unleashing a long-forgotten horror hidden away for decades.”

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 hits theaters on December 5th from Universal Pictures.

‘The History Of Sound’ Trailer: Josh O’Connor And Paul Mescal Lead Queer Historical Drama This September

THE HISTORY OF SOUND stars Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor

Looking for an indie drama that has “awards season darling” all over it? Look no further than The History of Sound, which stars two of the biggest actors working today, Josh O’Connor and Paul Mescal.

The queer historical drama is directed by Oliver Hermanus, based on the short story by screenwriter Ben Shattuck. Beginning in 1917 and spanning decades, the story follows the relationship between two musicians who embark on an impromptu journey to collect traditional folk music from their countrymen in the backwoods of Maine.

Also in the cast are Chris Cooper, Molly Price, Alison Bartlett, Raphael Sbarge, Emma Canning, and Brianna Middleton.

SYNOPSIS: In 1917, Lionel—a young, talented music student—meets David at the Boston Conservatory, where they bond over a deep love of folk music. Years later, Lionel receives a letter from David, leading to an impromptu journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional songs. This unexpected reunion, ensuing love affair, and the music they collect and preserve, will shape the course of Lionel’s life far beyond his own awareness.

Hermanus’ most recent film, Living, released in 2022 and earned two Academy Award nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for star Bill Nighy. So it won’t be a total shock if Hermanus finds himself in the awards conversation again.

MUBI will release The History of Sound in theaters on September 12th.

‘Road House 2’ Lands ‘Heads Of State’ Director Ilya Naishuller

Jake Gyllenhaal's ROAD HOUSE 2 has a new director in Ilyna Naishuller

No shock here. Amazon MGM is keeping it in-house when finding a replacement director for Road House 2, following the sudden exit of Guy Ritchie. Deadline reports Heads of State director Ilya Naishuller will take over the barroom-brawling sequel starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

Naishuller’s most recent film, the John Cena/Idris Elba action-comedy Heads of State, has been a solid hit for Amazon MGM on Prime Video, ranking #1 for three weeks. Clearly, they took notice of that success, plus Naishuller’s skill with the genre. Other films on Naishuller’s resume include the video game flick Hardcore Henry and the Bob Odenkirk actioner Nobody. Pretty good list.

Road House 2 will have a script by Will Beall, and there’s talk of Dave Bautista coming aboard in a co-starring role. The first film was a reimagining of the 1989 classic starring Patrick Swayze, and centered on Dalton, an ex-UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer at a rowdy Florida bar. He gets into lots of fights and keeps forgetting to wear shirts. It’s unclear what the plot of the next movie will be. Dalton hightailed it outta town at the conclusion, so he could pop up anywhere.

Nothing against Naishuller, whose movies I’ve liked a lot, but Ritchie and original director Doug Liman brought big-screen cachet that Naishuller just doesn’t right now. We’ll see how this turns out. I’m cautiously optimistic.

RIP: Wrestling Legend And ‘Rocky III’ Actor Hulk Hogan Dead At 71

HULK HOGAN, dead at 71

Since yesterday, rumors swirled that wrestling legend and actor Terry “Hulk Hogan” Bollea was on his deathbed. While some close to him shot those reports down, they unfortunately proved to be true. Hogan has died at the age of 71, reportedly of cardiac arrest.

Like most wrestling fans, I have a love/hate relationship with Hulk Hogan. The iconic WWE/WWF superstar was World Heavyweight Champion for much of my childhood, known for his “say your prayers, eat your vitamins” catchphrase and those epic “24-inch pythons” that were his massive biceps.

When Hogan left WWF in 1993 and went to WCW, only to be met by lukewarm crowds sick of his babyface schtick, he changed the business forever by turning heel and becoming leader of the mega-popular New World Order faction. He became cool again to an entirely new generation of wrestling fans.

Hogan was also an actor, known primarily for his unforgettable performance as Thunderlips in Rocky III. He went on to star in such films as No Holds Barred, Santa with Muscles, Suburban Commando, and many more, along with multiple TV shows such as Thunder in Paradise and the reality show Hogan Knows Best. While he never reached the heights of what John Cena, Dwayne Johnson, and Dave Bautista are doing as actors today, it was Hogan who laid the groundwork them.

Of course, Hogan would alienate a large swath of his fans later due to various scandals and at least one racist tirade caught on tape. His backstage reputation took a beating, too, leading to him getting booed recently at a WWE event.

I’m not going to crack jokes about Hogan now that he’s dead. That’s just weak sauce, in my opinion. Whatever we learned about him later in life, Hogan entertained me for much of my life and for that I’m thankful.

Punch Drunk Critics sends its condolences to the friends and family of Hulk Hogan. You can check out my video tribute to No Holds Barred below. [TMZ]

‘Train Dreams’ Trailer: Joel Edgerton Helps Build America In Clint Bentley’s Wistful Netflix Drama

Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones in TRAIN DREAMS

I’ll reiterate what I said back in February after Netflix acquired the Sundance film Train Dreams. Netflix has its best shot at a Best Picture winner right here. There’s a reason the Joel Edgerton-led drama has a 97% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. You can find my glowing review here.

The first trailer for Train Dreams has arrived, and it is a wonderful reminder of how beautiful and poetic this movie is. Set in the early 20th-century, Edgerton plays a lonely day laborer who spends most of his life building railroads across America. But this ordinary, everyday life turns out to be rather extraordinary with the places he goes and the people he meets along the way.

Joining Edgerton in the cast are Felicity Jones, Kerry Condon, William H. Macy, Clifton Collins Jr., and Paul Schneider.

The duo of Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar teamed up on Train Dreams. Bentley directed and co-wrote the script with Kwedar. They previously worked together on two other festival favorites, Jockey in 2021, and Sing Sing in 2023.

I’ll be pushing hard to do some interviews for this one. Fingers crossed for me, folks.

Train Dreams will have a limited theatrical release on November 7th, before moving to Netflix on November 21st.

New ‘One Battle After Another’ Trailer Is Wildest Look Yet At Paul Thomas Anderson’s Latest

Leonardo DiCaprio in ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER

A second One Battle After Another trailer in the span of a few days? Gee, it’s almost like Warner Bros. heard the complaints about the lack of support Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest was getting. For what it’s worth, this is the best look at the film by far, boasting tons of action, humor, car chases, a Tom Cruise reference, and Leonardo DiCaprio leaping from a speeding car.

DiCaprio stars as a former revolutionary who joins with his former running buddies to save his daughter from his mortal enemy, Colonel Lockjaw, played by Sean Penn.

Also in the cast are newcomer Chase Infiniti, Benicio Del Toro (who is really cool in this trailer!), Teyana Taylor, Regina Hall, Wood Harris, and Alana Haim.

The film is Anderson’s second adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon book, after 2014’s Inherent Vice. I would argue that movie was the first drastic misstep by Anderson, and he struggled to course correct until Licorice Pizza in 2021.

SYNOPSIS: “When their evil enemy resurfaces after 16 years, a group of ex-revolutionaries reunites to rescue one of their own’s daughter.”

One Battle After Another hits theaters on September 26th, meaning it won’t be part of the fall festival circuit.
