Marvel Netflix Heroes Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, And Iron Fist Could Finally Be Coming To The MCU

Marvel's Netflix heroes could come to the MCU

Ever since Marvel’s Netflix shows were all canceled in 2019, fans have been wondering when or if those characters would show up in the MCU. Kevin Feige kept a “never say never” attitude about the whole thing, but it seemed unlikely to happen for numerous reasons. But with Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Jon Bernthal all returning for Daredevil: Born Again, the door was kicked wide open for all of the Netflix characters to make a comeback, and now we know it’s being discussed.

According to Marvel Studios’ Brad Winderbaum in an interview with EW, conversations are happening about bringing Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and even Iron Fist into the MCU.

“I can’t say much, but I’ll tell you that it’s so exciting to be able to play in that sandbox,” Winderbaum said. “Obviously, we don’t have the unlimited storytelling resources like a comic book. If you can draw it, you can do it. It deals with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television,” he continued. “But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring.”

Jessica Jones starred Krysten Ritter and ran for three seasons; Mike Colter starred in two seasons of Luke Cage; Finn Jones led two seasons of Iron Fist. There was also one season of The Defenders, a series that brought all of the Netflix heroes, including Daredevil, together for a team-up mission.

Marvel’s Netflix deal was wildly popular, even when some of the shows didn’t work (lookin’ at you, Iron Fist) as planned. There’s a reason why fans still talk about them today. We began seeing Cox’s Daredevil show up in the MCU during Spider-Man: No Way Home, with other appearances in Echo, Hawkeye, and She-Hulk.

Daredevil: Born Again hits Disney+ on March 4th.

‘The Wrong Girls’: Kristen Stewart, Alia Shawkat, Seth Rogen, LaKeith Stanfield, Kumail Nanjiani To Star In NEON Stoner Comedy

Stewart and Shawkat to star in THE WRONG GIRLS for Neon

2024 saw NEON step up and claim the mantle of buzziest indie distributor, with multiple successful films including Longlegs, Immaculate, and Oscar nominees Anora and The Seed of the Sacred Fig. While 2025 is looking impressive, too (The Monkey opens this week), beyond that NEON is already loading up on what could be the next big thing. That could be The Wrong Girls, a stoner comedy with an A-list cast led by Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat.

Production is underway on The Wrong Girls, marking the debut of writer/director Dylan Meyer. The film centers on Frankie (Stewart) and Molly (Shawkat), codependent best friends living paycheck to paycheck and bong rip to bong rip, when a case of mistaken identity throws their lives into chaos.

Also in the cast are Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, LaKeith Stanfield, Zack Fox, and Tony Hale. Rogen is also a producer on the film.

The Wrong Girls is one of the first indie films to go into production in Los Angeles following the devastating wildfires. The production will take place completely in the city and 95% of the cast are LA residents including DP Todd Banhazi, composer Ty Segall, and Emmy nominated costume designer Heidi Bivens. Additionally, Philadelphia punk band Mannequin Pussy will perform for the film at an LA DIY space.

Meyer produced Stewart’s directorial debut, The Chronology of Water, and previously co-wrote the Netflix films XOXO and Moxie.

The Wrong Girls is Stewart’s third film with NEON following Spencer, which earned her first Oscar nomination, and David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future. She was most recently seen in the futuristic romance Love Me.

Shawkat was last seen in Zoe Kravitz’s Blink Twice. She can be seen now in the second season of Apple series Severance, and later this year in the award-winning Sundance film Atropia.

Daniel Craig Exits Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Sgt. Rock’ Movie At DC Studios

Daniel Craig has exited Luca Guadagnino's SGT ROCK movie. Who takes over to lead Easy Company?

A reunion between Daniel Craig and director Luca Guadagnino is going to have to wait. THR reports Craig has dropped out of the DC Studios project Sgt. Rock, which is to be directed by Guadagnino. The two recently worked together on the William S. Burroughs adaptation Queer.

Sgt. Rock isn’t a superhero, nor does he have any powers. He is a WWII U.S. Army soldier, a crack shot with a gun, and a leader in Easy Company. He first appeared in Joe Kubert and Robert Kanigher’s Our Army at War comic in 1959. This being comic books, Sgt. Frank Rock managed to survive the fighting and find action in modern times alongside heroes including Batman, Superman, the Suicide Squad, and the Creature Commandos. Gee, who REALLY likes those characters? James Gunn does, that’s who.

The film has a script by writer Justin Kuritzkes, who previously wrote Queer and Challengers for Guadagnino.

As for reasons why Craig dropped out, the report’s sources say it could have to do with scheduling conflicts related to his wife, actress Rachel Weisz. Another reason could have to do with the lukewarm response to Queer, which failed to do much after being pegged as an awards season favorite. If it’s the latter, we might not see Craig work with Guadagnino in the future at all.

Coming up for Craig is a return as Detective Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man later this year. The search is on for a new actor to lead Sgt. Rock.

James Bond Creative Control Moves To Amazon MGM As Longtime Producers Take A Back Seat

What happens to 007 now that Amazon/MGM is in charge?

For fans of 007, the future of James Bond has never been more uncertain than it is right now. It’s been unavoidable reports of disharmony between Bond producers the Broccoli family and Amazon/MGM, especially since Daniel Craig’s final film No Time to Die. And now today comes the news from Deadline that many have been dreading: producers and longtime creative stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have relinquished creative control of the spy franchise to Amazon MGM Studios.

This new venture will find Broccoli and Wilson retaining co-ownership of the James Bond rights, but taking a step back creatively. The Broccoli family has been the major force behind Bond for more than sixty years, with Barbara taking over in 1996.

Broccoli and Wilson, the latter also a co-writer on multiple films since 1981’s For Your Eyes Only, have navigated 007 through changing attitudes, cultural shifts, and momentary fads. While the franchise has definitely had its ups and downs, Bond has stayed relevant with many different actors taking on the role. In fact, they found the greatest success with the latest Bond, Daniel Craig, someone Broccoli championed from the start. They have stood against rising momentum to alter James Bond drastically. Remember when some vocal fans wanted to cast a woman? Or to make him non-English?

But problems seemed to arise with the streaming revolution. No Time to Die was nearly sold to Amazon at one point to be a streaming exclusive, only for them to acquire it anyway with the purchase of MGM. Since that film’s release in 2021 and the conclusion of Craig’s run, there has been no movement on a new Bond amid reports of a breakdown in the relationship between the producers and Amazon/MGM.

Admittedly, I am not the biggest James Bond fan but my Dad loved it and I have always appreciated the way the Broccolis treated it as precious. You don’t see a glut of Bond content out there. There’s no Bond streaming series, you don’t get a new movie every year quality be damned. Attempts to do loads of spinoffs (remember Jinx?) never happened. It makes every Bond movie feel like a major event to get them so irregularly.

With Amazon/MGM taking over, that could all change. It will be just another brand to them. Similar to when Disney acquired Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise, we could see Bond content everywhere all of the time. The possibility of a Bond/Reacher crossover event is greater now than ever. That might sound ridiculous, but you know it at least has a chance of happening, don’t you?

This is going to have massive ripple effects around Hollywood.

Here’s what Wilson had to say: “With my 007 career spanning nearly 60 incredible years, I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects. Therefore, Barbara and I agree, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future.”

Broccoli has always been the most vocal driver of James Bond’s creative plans, so it’s shocking to see here step away. Here’s what she said: “My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli. I have had the honour of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of No Time to Die and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.”

What do you think happens to James Bond now?

‘Nowhere Fast’: Chris Pine To Star In Noah Hawley’s Texas Crime Thriller

Chris Pine is headed back to Texas for NOWHERE FAST

Noah Hawley has stayed busy of late with his FX series Fargo and the upcoming Alien: Earth series arriving later this year. His last film on the big screen was 2019’s Lucy in the Sky, but he’s ready to return with Nowhere Fast, a crime thriller that will star Chris Pine.

Hawley will write, direct, and produce Nowhere Fast, with Pine set as his leading man.  The Texas crime thriller follows a small-town criminal who inadvertently kills the nephew of his boss, and the consequences that spin out of that. Hawley will produce through his 26 Keys Productions banner, partnering with 30 West.

No other members of the cast have been revealed yet.

Pine has a pretty good track record with Texas-based thrillers. He starred in Taylor Sheridan’s critically acclaimed Hell or High Water alongside Ben Foster and Tommy Lee Jones.

Although Hawley and Pine have never worked together before, there is a slight connection between them. Hawley was briefly attached to direct a Star Trek reboot set within the same universe as the series of films that starred Pine as Captain Kirk. The film never happened, of course.

Expect more details on Nowhere Fast to come, including who will star opposite Pine.

Spike Lee Reveals First Look At A$AP Rocky In ‘Highest 2 Lowest’

A$AP Rocky in HIGHEST 2 LOWEST

Spike Lee is celebrating the not guilty verdict on gun charges against A$AP Rocky by revealing a first look at his next film, Highest 2 Lowest, starring the rapper/actor alongside Denzel Washington. A loose remake of Akira Kurosawa’s classic, High & Low, the crime film is expected to be released by A24 this summer, likely after a Cannes premiere.

Kurosawa’s classic centers on a wealthy businessman caught in the middle of a kidnapping plot and ransom demand that puts him in a moral quandary. Lee’s film still doesn’t have an official synopsis, but the details likely won’t change much. A24 has yet to give it a release date, but once the theatrical run is over it will move to Apple TV+.

Lee revealed the image of A$AP on his Instagram. Hopefully, this means more images of the cast will arrive soon. Along with Denzel, the film stars Jeffrey Wright, Ice Spice, Dean Winters, Ilfenesh Hadera, and more. The screenplay was co-written by Lee and Alan Fox.

Review: ‘The Monkey’

Oz Perkins' Bananas Follow-Up To 'Longlegs' Brings Extreme Gore But Little Else

Theo James in THE MONKEY

While the promotion for The Monkey heavily features director Oz Perkins’ hit serial killer film Longlegs, anyone who goes into it expecting a similar tone will get knocked for a loop. The adaptation of Stephen King’s short is bonkers; the kind of film that laughs with devilish glee at every insanely over-the-top slaughter. If you dig the tongue-in-cheek killings of Final Destination, this will likely be up your alley. But also like that long-running franchise, when The Monkey isn’t going bananas, the other stuff is pretty forgettable.

The opening scene sets the campy mood, as airline pilot Captain Petey Shelburn, played by Adam Scott in a funny bit cameo, enters a pawn shop, his clothes covered in blood. He tries desperately to persuade the disinterested owner to buy a wind-up toy monkey. In the book it’s much smaller, but in the movie it’s something you can’t miss. Its big furry head, a maw full of teeth, and over-large arms holding a drumstick and drum. It looks like a monster that should belong to an organ grinder. Petey warns the man that when it starts banging the drum, bad shit happens. He’s right, of course. The moment that drumstick hits, a random rat triggers a spear gun that impales the owner, only to be dragged out along with the man’s lengthy intestines. Fun!! No, really, the wildly gruesome stuff is when The Monkey is a blast, and you sit on the edge of your seat anticipating the next hilarious death.

While the toy monkey is definitely THE star of the show, Theo James holds up admirably well in a double role as Petey’s estranged kiddos, twin brothers Hal and Bill. Played initially by Christian Convery, the boys couldn’t be more different. Hal is the geeky, spectacled one while Bill is a bully and has been since they were in the womb. They find their dad’s toy monkey and set it loose, unaware of what they’ve done. When people start dying by insanely excessive means (the poor babysitter at the hibachi joint gets more than extra fried rice), they slowly start to figure out that the doll carries a terrible curse. She-Hulk‘s Tatiana Maslany has a solid role early on as their mother, who has refused to let her tough life beat her down too much, until life decides to throw a killer blow too much even for her.

The deaths pile up quick once the monkey returns 25 years later, and The Monkey is one of the most gruesome movies in recent memory. The fate of poor Uncle Chip (played by Perkins himself) at the hooves of stampeding horses is pretty epic, but there are others competing with it for the most twisted. The inscription on the monkey’s box says “like life”, and there’s something to be said about the indiscriminate, unstoppable way it kills. So yeah, a lot like life. Everybody dies.

When the massacres stop, though, The Monkey doesn’t have much to keep our attention. The ongoing feud between the estranged siblings isn’t much of a hook and doesn’t make much sense if you think about it too hard. Perkins doesn’t seem that interested in them, anyway, other than to get their reactions to the insane deaths happening all around them. While he’s improved of late, Perkins still isn’t the most exciting filmmaker around. The colors are dark and drab, as if attempting to inspire the same sort of menace that permeates Longlegs, but The Monkey is a decidedly more eccentric story and it doesn’t work. James is pretty sympathetic as the adult Hal, a sad sack with a son (Colin O’Brien) that he sees only once a year. Even with the kid hanging around not much changes. Hal keeps doing the same things, and oddly, bringing his son around the monkey which he knows kills the people closest to him. Whatever. Somebody wind that monkey up again already! That’s what we’re here to see, anyway.

The Monkey opens in theaters on February 21st.

‘The Actor’ Trailer: André Holland & Gemma Chan Star In Duke Johnson’s Film Noir Mystery

Andre Holland in THE ACTOR

Duke Johnson is a renowned animator and filmmaker best known for co-directing Charlie Kaufman’s stop-motion film, Anomalisa, which deals heavily with memory and perceptions of others. For Johnson’s live-action solo directing debut, he’s taken on The Actor, an adaptation of crime novelist Donald E. Westlake’s novel, Memory, and starring André Holland and Gemma Chan.

The Actor stars Holland as a Black man in 1950s Ohio who is stricken with amnesia after surviving a brutal attack. Pieces of his memory begin to return as he also begins to court a local woman, only to realize that nothing is quite what it seems to be.

The film is directed by Johnson from a script he co-wrote with Steve Cooney.  Aboard as exec-producers are Kaufman and Ryan Gosling. Gosling had been attached to lead an earlier version of the project in 2021.

Joining Holland and Chan in the cast are May Calamawy, Asim Chaudhry, Joe Cole, Fabien Frankel, Olwen Fouéré, Edward Hogg, Toby Jones, Youssef Kerkour, Simon McBurney, Tanya Reynolds, Tracey Ullman, and Scott Alexander Young.

SYNOPSIS: “Based on the novel ‘Memory’ by Donald E. Westlake, ‘The Actor’ finds Paul Cole (Holland) stranded in a mysterious small town with no memory of who he is or how he got here. Without a sense of identity or purpose, he starts from scratch and begins courting a local costume designer Edna (Chan). As bits and pieces of his past slowly emerge, he attempts to find his way home, but time is slippery, appearances can’t be trusted, and it’s unclear which of his identities is real.“

NEON will release The Actor into theaters on March 14th!

‘Bring Her Back’ Trailer: Sally Hawkins Stars In New Horror Film From The Directors Of ‘Talk To Me’

BRING HER BACK opens in theaters on May 30th

Released in 2022, Talk To Me (review here) wasn’t just a huge $92M hit on a $4M budget, it was also A24’s highest-grossing horror movie ever. It was no shock when A24 locked in directors Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou to direct a sequel, as well as another original horror movie, titled Bring Her Back, which was announced last summer with Sally Hawkins in the lead role.

Today, A24 has revealed the first trailer for Bring Her Back, led by two-time Academy Award nominee Hawkins. Plot details have been kept under a veil of secrecy, and even the released synopsis keeps it a mystery:

A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.

The script is by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman. Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, Sally-Anne Upton, Stephen Phillips, and Mischa Heywood co-star.

A24 will release Bring Her Back in theaters on May 30th!
