Scream 7 has a franchise-low 29% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. So what? It also scored $213M worldwide, a box office high for the long-running horror. It was no surprise when Paramount/Spyglass moved forward with an eighth movie, even without writer/director and creator Kevin Williamson, who ducked out after one movie behind the camera. But there’s one staple who will be returning, and surprisingly, it’s Neve Campbell, who has confirmed she’ll be back for Scream 8.
Speaking with AP London, Campbell said “‘Scream 8,’ you know, that’s in the pipeline,” when talking about upcoming projects. She declined to say anything further.
While a director is still unclear, we do know that Poker Face and Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot writers Lilla and Nora Zuckerman will write the script. Expect a director to be named soon, and it’ll be interesting to see if they go for one of the hot upstart crop of filmmakers who are out there right now.
Scream 7 was a huge win, considering all of the drama caused by the firing of Melissa Barrera, and the exits of Jenna Ortega and directors Radio Silence and Christopher Landon. Producers faced a ton of backlash initially, but they stuck it out and found a way to rebound. The return of Campbell was a big part of that, and keeping her around for the long haul must have been top priority.
