- Street Fighter (review)- $31M
Street Fighter dragon punched the competition at the box office, winning the week with a $31M domestic launch. That’s less than Mortal Kombat II‘s $38M debut earlier this year, but that film had an $80M budget and only earned $129M worldwide at the end of its run. Globally, the Capcom fighting game flick has $51M, and a 79% audience score on RT. Critics were less forgiving at 42%, but let’s be real, this one is going to succeed or fail based on fans of the franchise, and so far they are turning out.
2. You Can See Everything– $15M
The real story of the week is A24’s Elizabeth Holmes doc, You Can See Everything, which scored a stunning $15M at 855 screens and a whopping 2,000 sold out shows. Damn. That’s the second-best debut ever for a documentary behind Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 opened with $23.9M in 2004. Directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, the film follows the days ahead of Theranos fraudster Elizabeth Holmes’ stint in prison. People have been buzzing about this movie and its unconventional “is it or is it not real?” approach since it premiered at Telluride. Audiences and critics both loved it, holding it at nearly 100% on RT.
3. Other Mommy– $8.3M/$44.8M
4. Whalefall (review)- $8M
Austin Abrams, one of the breakout stars of the past year with Weapons and Resident Evil, couldn’t bring that success over to Whalefall. The preposterous survival thriller about a grief-stricken scuba diver trapped inside of a whale’s stomach, earned just $8M despite solid critical reviews at 70%, and an audience score of 80%. It’s possible that the prominent weekends of Street Fighter and You Can See Everything sucked all of the air out.
5. Sense and Sensibility– $7.2M
Focus Features released Sense and Sensibility, the latest adaptation of the Jane Austen classic, into 2,545 theaters and earned $7.2M. Led by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esme Creed-Miles as the Dashwood sisters, the film by Georgia Oakley was well-received with critics having it at 76% and audiences at 90% on RT.
6. Verity– $6.2M/$66M
7. Resident Evil– $5.5M/$148.4M
8. Heart of the Beast– $4.8M/$58.3M
9. Jailer 2– $3.2M
10. Forgotten Island– $2.2M/$35.1M
Also…Netflix’s biggest swing for the Best Picture Oscar this year, the queer epic la bola negra (review) had the best PSA of the week with $277K at just four locations. The film has an 87% score on RT from critics, and will be moving over to the streamer in December. [BoxOfficeMojo]
