‘Whalefall’ Trailer: Austin Abrams Is Whale Food In Brian Duffield’s Silly-Looking Survival Thriller

When the first trailer for Brian Duffield’s Whalefall dropped a couple of months ago, I stated that I put all of my trust in Duffield because his past work had been incredibly good. Good enough to look past a ridiculous premise where a grief-stricken dude gets swallowed up by a sperm whale and must escape before he suffocates.

I’m conflicted about this second trailer, though. A plot this ridiculous should probably be played as silly, and it certainly looks that way based on this footage. However, the first teaser made it look more competent and like a film worth taking seriously. I’m shrugging my shoulders at this one until I can see it and judge accordingly.

Whalefall stars the red-hot Austin Abrams, fresh off Zach Cregger’s Weapons and Resident Evil. He’s joined by Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd. Abrams plays a scuba diver scouring the ocean for his father’s remains, when the unthinkable happens. You think he finds Pinocchio in that whale’s gut?

20th Century Studios opens Whalefall in theaters on October 16th.
